Softer Skin? This Is How You Do It | Guide to Exfoliation

Soft, Glass skin? this is how you do it

If you’re starting to incorporate exfoliating into your weekly skincare routine then you’re on the right path to glowwier soft skin!

Ok let’s get sciency: Exfoliation works by sloughing off dead skin cells to prevent cell buildup that would result in not-so-cute dullness and textured bumpy skin. Not to mention, its making it harder for your skincare to fully absorb into the skin. Pretty much like a sponge soaking up all the water which in this case the sponge is the dead skin and the water being the skincare, we dont want that.

You’d think, ‘well i’ll just start exfoliating then’ but the thing about exfoliation is that, you can get amazing results if you do it right but it can also be just as damaging to the skin if done wrongly. Cue in Hollaface! that’s why we’re here, to simplify and ease it out for everyone to incorporate.

One thing to understand, exfoliation can be done both physically and chemically. Physical exfoliation can be done with brushes, scrubs, micro-beads that works by physically scrubbing off the dead skin cells. Chemical exfoliation on the other hand works by applying acids like Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA) which breaks the bond between dead skin cells making it easier to slough it off without needing to physically scrub it and risk irritation and micro-cuts. Regardless, both exfoliating methods have their pros and cons. Here at Hollaface, we focus on delivering you the best results without compromising the skin so we’ll be focusing on chemical exfoliation.

What could go wrong with chemical exfoliants (AHA BHA)?

  1. Could cause purging and breakout
  2. High risk of irritation and sensitisation
  3. Could dry out skin
  4. Makes skin more photosensitive
  5. Could darken hyperpigmentation

How to get it right?

  1. Start with low percentage i.e AHA below 2% and BHA below 0.5%
  2. Start with low frequency i.e once a week
  3. Use hydrating and soothing products to nourish skin
  4. Stop and let your skin recover when purging/breakouts happen
  5. Wear sunscreen and reapply every 2 hours
